It will take some pressure off the alternative State Highway 1, which has been overrun by a volume of trucks it was never built for while the coastal highway remained closed.

KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy said two freight trains would run each night initially, which was about 60 per cent capacity compared to pre-quake volumes.

It would take about 2000 trucks a month off the alternative highway, he said.

"When you think about the [alternative route], you think about the safety issues on the road, there was a fatality unfortunately just last weekend, so 2000 trucks off the road is significant for New Zealand, and I'm sure the local communities will be happy too."

The initial opening would be restricted to low-speed, low-frequency services.

About 150 kilometres of line has been made ready for trains, including 5000 new concrete sleepers being laid, 12km of track being rebuilt and 5km of track realigned, Reidy said.

He said the work was "at least three months ahead of schedule".

KiwiRail rail protection manager Paul Andrews said the track had been rejoined using a chemical weld called a "one shot thermic weld". There are many factors that go into designing, manufacturing, and testing high-quality hydraulic hoses.

Hydraulic hoses and assemblies are frequently constructed of multiple materials, but the primary materials used are of the most importance. Rubber hydraulic hose is the most common but materials differ based on the requirements of the application.

Elastomeric or rubber hydraulic hoses range from low to high pressure and are often selected for their excellent flexibility. Fluoropolymer hoses provide superior chemical and corrosion resistance and high temperature operation.

Thermoplastic hydraulic hoses offer tight minimum bend radii and excellent kink resistance.

Metal hoses can handle high temperature flow materials and often can handle very high pressures. They can be either stiff or flexible.

Modern hydraulic hose typically consists of at least three parts: an inner tube that carries the fluid, a reinforcement layer, and a protective outer layer.

The inner tube must have some flexibility and needs to be compatible with the type of fluid it will carry.

The reinforcement layer consists of one or more sheaths of braided wire fabric or spiral-wound wire. The wire braid has a crisscross pattern around the perimeter of the hydraulic hose for flexibility. Instead of wires crossing each other, spiral wires remain parallel as they wrap around the hose.

The outer layer is often weather-, oil-, or abrasion-resistant, depending upon the type of environment the hose is designed for. This layer is referred to most commonly as cover type.

Hose vs Metal Tube:

Tube would typically be better when routed close to a heat source, and hose would be chosen for high vibration applications or when attached to moving parts.

Hose is more flexible, available in longer lengths, quickly fabricated, easier to install in tight quarters, less vulnerable to corrosion and a better heat insulator. How long does a hydraulic hose last?

So many variables come into play that it is impossible to exactly predict the service life of a hose assembly. Key factors to consider include size, temperature, application, media, and pressure. Hydraulic hose size or inside diameter is sometimes referred to as the "Dash Size."

Spiral hose is stronger than braided and can withstand higher pressures.

Dirt and debris within a hydraulic fluid power system can cause tremendous damage very quickly. Oil contaminants can increase operating temperatures and damage components.

Change the oil and filter regularly to prolong the life of your system.

A hose assembly consists of a hose and hose fittings. Each of these components is rated independently in terms of working pressure. The maximum working pressure for the assembly is the lowest maximum working pressure between the fittings and hose.

Source: Parker.com

Gold fever triples Talisman value.

New Talisman Gold Mines Limited's announcement of the gold finds in the Karangahake Gorge has resulted in the company share value increasing nearly $20 million over the last year. The data compilation and resource modelling has brought a much greater understanding of the mine and sets a very positive platform for long term mine development at Talisman.”

Gold equivalents have been used as the historic data is expressed in bullion values. These have been converted to gold equivalents based on the gold price during the main historic mining period to 1919 where the gold price was a constant £4.25 or USD20.47. All more recent exploration data has been converted to gold equivalents at the same metal prices for consistency of resource estimation and reporting. The gold/silver ratio in the orebody averages approximately 1:4.“This is an awesome opportunity for NZ mineral investments to take such a great project to the world stage,” says Matthew.“While it has taken over two decades to be an overnight success, we are very proud of the work which has been accomplished in such a short space of time. The development of this national treasure, which historically employed thousands of people before slowing down due to a world war, is once again well on its way to production.“We are delighted at the support by most of the local community. As they say, ‘Grade is King', and the Talisman mine, which is up there in the world's highest grade gold deposits, is well set on its pathway towards to becoming a world-class mine.”Site works on the 0.4ha portal flat at the surface of the mine are complete and the site has been once again closed off and secured as it has been for over 26 years.Refurbishments of old sets underground are progressing well and are ahead on time and budget. It is expected these works will be complete by end of September.Future work will be mainly done underground and once strengthening and widening of sets is complete there will be room to allow a small underground loader to traverse all areas of the mine being targeted for prospecting and future small-scale mining and bulk sampling. They are currently taking five kg samples from the areas of old stopes and workings, which are being sent to SGS for lab testing.

Source: sunlive.co.nz

Waterview tunnel opening.

Since opening on July 2 the Waterview tunnel, which connects the Northwestern and Southwestern motorways, has been praised by motorists for slashing commuting times particularly between Auckland International Airport and the CBD. Specifically, these filler metals provide abrasion and/or impact resistance.

On older equipment, hardfacing can return worn parts to a nearly new condition for about 25 to 75 percent less than the cost of replacement parts. Hardfacing can also lengthen the life of surfaced parts by up to 300 percent more than non-surfaced parts, especially on newer equipment.

Impact wear often occurs on equipment like crusher rolls, impact hammers and impactor bars, and results from a compressive load placing high mechanical stress on the equipment. The best protection against this type of wear is to use an austenitic manganese steel (11 to 20 percent Mn) filler metal, as it offers good work hardening characteristics.

To protect against adhesive or metal-to-metal wear, which occurs from the non-lubricated friction of metal parts against one another, use a martensitic hard surfacing alloy. Austenitic manganese or cobalt-based alloys also work but they may be too soft to resist adhesive wear for as long of a period of time.

When equipment repeatedly encounters high temperatures and rapidly cools afterward, it can result in high-temperature wear, also called thermal fatigue or fire cracking, which leaves deep cracks in the equipment's base material. This type of wear is usually secondary, or in addition to the abrasion or impact wear equipment encounters.

Generally, a non-ferrous alloy is best for protecting steel surfaces subject to temperatures above 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. For those below this range, a filler metal containing chromium-carbide or a martensitic steel filler metal with 5 to 12 percent chromium is suitable.

Talk to us today to discuss your hard facing requirements, we have the equipment and expertise to help you save time and money.

Sir Gordon Tietjens we salute you.

We would like to pay tribute to legendary sevens coach Sir Gordon Tietjens following his decision not to seek a new contract after 22 years at the helm of the All Black Sevens team.Sir Gordon has led New Zealand to four Commonwealth Games gold medals, 12 World Rugby Sevens Series titles and two Sevens World Championship titles, becoming the most successful coach of all time in the abbreviated form of the game.He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2012 and knighted for his

We would like to pay tribute to legendary sevens coach Sir Gordon Tietjens following his decision not to seek a new contract after 22 years at the helm of the All Black Sevens team.

Sir Gordon has led New Zealand to four Commonwealth Games gold medals, 12 World Rugby Sevens Series titles and two Sevens World Championship titles, becoming the most successful coach of all time in the abbreviated form of the game.

He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2012 and knighted for his contribution to rugby 12 months later. Many great All Blacks have emerged from the teams he has coached including Jonah Lomu, Christian Cullen, Ben Smith and Beauden Barrett. New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Steve Tew said Sir Gordon had carved out a unique place in New Zealand rugby history. “Titch has guided the All Blacks Sevens team through more than 100 international tournaments, a remarkable achievement that may never be equalled. “The number of former sevens players who’ve gone on to become All Blacks speaks for itself and demonstrates the incredible impact that Titch has had on our game. To put the length of his career into context, when he first began in this role rugby was an amateur game, Jim Bolger was Prime Minister and several members of the current All Blacks Sevens team hadn’t even been born. “New Zealand Rugby and our country owe him a debt of gratitude for the legacy he’s left behind and all the memories and careers he’s shaped along the way.” Sir Gordon said he had taken some time to think about his options following the recent Olympic campaign and felt the time was right for a fresh challenge. “I love the sevens game and I’m immensely proud of what I’ve achieved and what all our players have been able to achieve in my time with the team,” he said. “We were all incredibly disappointed with our results in Rio, but we have to acknowledge just how far sevens rugby has come. It’s become intensely competitive and the Olympics proved just how tough it is to win at this level these days. I’m sure lessons will be learnt and I wish my successor all the best for the Sevens Series ahead and for the Tokyo Olympic Games. “I’ve loved my time in sevens and I aim to still be involved in some capacity. I’m now working through what those next steps are. “I’m grateful to New Zealand Rugby for the support they’ve given me over the years. I want to especially acknowledge the management team and all the players who have contributed to the success of New Zealand sevens during the last 22 years. I have so many great memories from what’s been an amazing time with the team.”

The process to recruit a new coach of the All Blacks Sevens team will get underway immediately with Sir Gordon’s successor expected to take the team into the new season which kicks off in Dubai on 2 December.

Background Sir Gordon Tietjens KNZM Sir Gordon Tietjens has coached the All Blacks Sevens at more than 100 international sevens tournaments since taking over the side in 1994. Keep in mind that nominal micron ratings may range anywhere from 50 – 98.6% efficient at removing a specific particle size.Absolute Micron Rating

This rating means that the filter is capable of removing at least 98.7% of a specific size particle.

This rating is determined through a single-pass or multi-pass test in which fluid containing measureable particles is passed through a flat sheet of filter material. Particles that pass through are measured and counted. This rating is more informative than the nominal micron rating.

As a general rule, the smaller micron rating for a filter is better, especially if you are on well water, but as with most everything, there is a trade-off. Flow capability usually drops off as the micron rating gets smaller, especially if the water has a lot of sediment.

Contact us today to discuss your specialist filtration requirements.

Oceana Gold Mines Rescue Team take on the Sky Tower.

850 firefighters raced up the 1,103 stairs in Auckland's iconic Sky Tower raising an amazing $1.16 million for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. The team from Oceana Gold, Macraes Mine in Otago took took on the 51 Floors while carrying approximately 25kgs of kit with them. For a full list of participant results visit the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge website. From left to right: Michael McDonald, Greg Beel, Andrew Hartmann, Stephen Renton.Well done lads!

For a full list of participant results visit theFirefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge website.

From left to right: Michael McDonald, Greg Beel, Andrew Hartmann, Stephen Renton.

Well done lads!

Specialist Services, check out this short clip to see who we are and what we do.

This short video will give you an insight into our specialist services, an overview of some of the projects we have been involved with as well as who we are and what we do.

This short video will give you an insight into our specialist services, an overview of some of the projects we have been involved with as well as who we are and what we do.

The new Knife Gate Valves from Victaulic allows you to replace wear parts in without dismantling your pipeline. The tunnel offers greater sewerage capacity to cater for projected population growth in the area and prevents wastewater overflows into both the Bay and Waitemata Harbour basin. The replacement of the existing wastewater pipe also opens up the Bay for recreational boating.

The project scope consists of a 3 km long, 3.8 m internal diameter tunnel which is driven approximately 30 m below the bay floor; construction of three shafts of approximately 35 m to 40 m in depth (23 m, 8 m & 10 m internal diameters); surface reticulation/connection works; and demolition of the existing sewer pipeline that crosses the Bay.

This project uses a Tunnel Boring Machine by Lovat of Canada, and construction techniques are designed for a combined firm rock and soft substrate. The 23 m diameter shaft includes considerable mechanical and electrical works (the supply and installation of six 1MVA pumps), while all three shafts also require a significant amount of concrete works. McConnell Dowell has worked closely with Watercare Services to develop a stakeholder management plan to ensure bay users were not impacted during the construction of the new tunnel - especially during the demolition of the existing sewer line. Construction of the surface reticulation works has required some traffic management plans to be developed and implemented to ensure minimal impact on road users. To minimise distruption to local residents in the construction area the construction team have also implemented innovative noise reduction measures including completely enclosing of the head house. Tunnelling 30 m under the bay's mud and rock floor has ensured minimal environmental disturbance during construction. The demolition of the old sewer is the subject of a detailed environmental management plan which ensures removal of the structure does not impact on the marine environment. A huge effort has also been put into procuring equipment from a diverse range of manufacturers located throughout the world. Extensive QA practice's have been utilised to ensure that the equipment has been manufactured to standard and would be delivered to New Zealand on time. The tunnelling section of the works started on the day of the programme and was completed on 5th February 2009 (breakthrough), 17 days ahead of schedule.
